 Private Message Notification
There are several ways to become aware that a member of the forum has sent you a Private Message:
Log in and look at the "x new messages" button.
Visit your Inbox by clicking that same button.
Enable PM e-mail notification in your profile.
Enable pop-up notification in your profile.

The first two methods are simple:
After logging in (How?) look at the "x new messages" button at the top of any page. If, for example, if you received two new PMs since you last visited your Inbox, then the label 2 new messages appears on the button. After visiting your Inbox, the label changes back to No new messages until another new message arrives.

No matter what label appears on this button, you can click it to visit your Inbox. Any messages that you have not yet opened are preceded by an icon something like one of these:
or

Messages that you have already opened are preceded by the icon below, instead:
or

(Note: The graphics can change with different styles used on a particular forum, but there is generally a legend at the bottom of most forum pages to explain some of the basic icons used)

Another way to receive notification is to enable options in your member profile that cause the system to send you an e-mail message each time a new PM is sent to your Inbox and/or to display a pop-up message while you are visiting the forum, indicating that a new PM has arrived. You can enable either or both option(s) by following the instructions below.
Notes:
There is an indicator in your Inbox (shown below) that lets you know how full it is, in terms of the limit placed on the storage space. As the percentage nears 100%, we recommend that you delete some messages (How?) or move them to your Savebox (How?) so that there is always enough room in your Inbox for new messages.
Members who send PMs are able to delete them from their Outboxes between the time they send them to you and the time you open them. If you click on a link in a PM notification message, and no new message appears in your Inbox, it means that the member deleted the message and it was removed from your Inbox before you "picked it up."
To enable e-mail notification of Private Messages:
When you first register for the forum, select Yes for the Notify on new Private Message option in the registration form. How?
If you have already registered for the forum, select Yes for the Notify on new Private Message option in either the profile edit form or the Preferences area of the forum. How?
When someone sends you a PM, the forum sends you an e-mail message, letting you know that a new PM is in your Inbox. There is a link in the message that takes you directly to your PM Inbox in the forum. (If you are logged out, you will be prompted to log in, first.)
To enable pop-up message notification of Private Messages:
When you first register for the forum, select Yes for the Pop up window on new Private Message option in the registration form. How?
If you have already registered for the forum, select Yes for the Pop up window on new Private Message option in either the profile edit form or the Preferences area of the forum. How?
When someone sends you a PM, a pop-up message appears while you are visiting the forum, letting you know that a new PM is in your Inbox. There is a link in the message that takes you directly to your PM Inbox.
Notes:
If you want to be notified by pop-up message, you must be logged into the forum for the message to appear (How?). Also, if you have a pop-up blocker on your computer, it might be necessary to disable it for this feature to work. JavaScript must be enabled on your computer system if you want pop-up notifications to appear.
